After completing my clinical psychology internship in Portland, Oregon, my first job was halfway across the country, in Omaha, Nebraska.

I joined the Psychology Department at Creighton University, and stayed there for three years.  They were good years for both my wife and me, and it was hard to make the decision to leave Omaha, even for the many attractions of New England.  But that’s what we did.  My next job was at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Since coming back East, I have taught a few seminars at Bay Path College in Longmeadow and the Elms College in Chicopee, reminding me how enjoyable a college classroom can be.  And reminding me as well how much you learn about something when you have to teach it.

I remain grateful for the exposure that Omaha gave us to Midwestern friendliness and heartland values.  Plus it was a treat to be able to watch the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson at a reasonable hour (10:30 Central Time instead of 11:30 Eastern).
